Slept like a dog

Aside from being a malaphor, “slept like a dog” would seem to mean “slept deeply and soundly.” But we know better than most (because we host all sorts of dogs all the time) that dogs typically wake up before us. They often wake at night to growl, sniff, or howl. They have adorable puppy dreams and nightmares, their little feet moving as they chase rabbits and squirrels in their sleep. But for those of us who, like me, love our sleep and never want to get out of bed, with our warm blankets and soft pillows, it’s way better to “sleep like a human.” It seems Holly also figured that out, as she catches up on her zzzzz’s with a pillow on the couch.
