It would be impossible to walk Beau on a 20-ft leash if he didn’t listen as well as he does. The point of a long leash is to let a dog learn to make good decisions themselves, rather than always be told what to do. It’s especially useful in teaching a dog how to lead instead of follow. Whenever we come to an intersection or turn, I let Bo know where to go by saying “this way.” Rather than coming to me, Beau takes a minute to sneak a sniff In the other direction 😊 and then heads ahead of me so he can pause and sniff something else. He doesn’t actually need a lot of direction at all, but it’s wonderful to be able to give it without needing to touch the leash at all. 🥰
